Launch your tech career
WiTNY is for all women interested in tech. Curious about coding? Want to learn about job opportunities in software development and user interface design? Looking to meet other women computer scientists?
We’d love to welcome you to WiTNY.
What is a Winternship?
A paid, three-week, mini-internship for first and second-year women at CUNY during their January academic recess (January 7-24). Winterns will be notified on a rolling basis from mid-November to mid-December if they have been matched with a company.
Why are Winternships valuable?
Winternships can be the first open door for women interested in exploring tech careers. This immersive work experience exposes students to job opportunities in tech and computing while helping them build a strong resume, a larger community of CUNY women, and a professional network. At the end of the three weeks, Winterns will have a basic understanding of the business and how it operates.
How is the Winternship program structured?
Winterns are placed at companies as a team of five. With guidance and support from the WiTNY team, each company designs its own program to immerse the students in their business. Winternship programs often include meetings with executives, job shadowing opportunities, brown bag lunch sessions, and site visits. In addition, each company identifies a “group project” that the students work together on during their three-week Winternship experience. At the end, students “pitch” their proposed solutions to the leadership team.
In 2018, 177 students and 46 companies participated in WiTNY’s Winternship program. The companies included Verizon, Warby Parker, Mastercard, Turner Broadcasting, AppNexus, Citi Ventures, Dow Jones, Bitly, and Blackstone, among others. In 2019, our goal is to double those numbers and offer a number of “sponsored Winternships” for startups and nonprofit organizations that would like to host a group of Winterns.
I'm a computer science major. Should I consider a Winternship?
Yes. Besides expanding your technology capabilities, a Wintership will build your professional network and offer you exposure to a variety of career options.
I'm NOT a computer science major. Should I consider a Winternship?
Yes. All companies pose a group project for five Winterns to solve together, so we’re always looking for women with a variety of skills, experiences, and interests in tech.
How do I apply?
Applications for the 2019 Winternships are now closed. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Do I have to interview?
No. WiTNY will match each Wintern with a company that is the best fit for them.
If I apply, am I guaranteed to get a Winternship?
No. We will do our best to accommodate all Winternship applications, but we cannot guarantee that every student will be matched with a company. First and second-year students will be given priority.
When I found out that I was going to be a Wintern at Turner Broadcasting, it was like a dream come true for me. My Winternship showed me that not only am I capable of entering the technology field, I can thrive in it.”
